Welcome to Paradise! In December 2007, EA released a demo of a game called Burnout Paradise. I've not been "in to" racing/driving games before, but as I've learned from previously released demos, I should try it out and see if I like it. You never know when you'll be surprised. Needless to say. After about 10 minutes of getting the hang of the controls and the roads, I was hooked. After playing the demo for countless hours, I knew that this would be a game that I want, when it comes out.
Fast forward to this past weekend. My loving wife gave me a Valentine's Day present early: Burnout Paradise! WOW. Simply WOW. The full game is so much better, richer, and fuller than the demo was. I really like the openness that Paradise provides. Freely able to drive around and explore the huge city and find all the collectibles: smashes (yellow private property fences), billboards (Burnout billboards that can be driven through), and super jumps(huge, "super" jumps that take a slow motion cinematic picture of the jump). Oops, don't forget the numerous cars that are available to be unlocked and taken down. As you win various events (Stunt Run, Road Rage, Burning Route, Marked Man, and Race), you will unlock cars. Those unlocked cars will now be found driving around the city. In order to be able to drive that particular car, you'll have to take it down (make it crash! woot!) and it will be delivered to your junkyard.
Another aspect I like is the seamless online gameplay, which I feel comes in two parts, interactive and "passive". The interactive online play comes with playing with friends or other random people. There are special challenges available and the host can setup races to/from anywhere in the game and both provide a great level of interaction and challenge.
The "passive" online gameplay comes in the form of "Road Rules", which also come in two flavors: Time and Crash. Time Road Rules are, basically, how fast can you drive down the entire length of a road. This time then gets compared to the fastest time of your friends. The Crash Road Rules utilize the "Showtime" mode that is in Burnout and players compete for the highest score for any given road. Showtime allows you to start a spectacular crash at anytime. When in Showtime, your boost makes the now wrecked car "bounce" and the goal is to hit as many cars and cause the most damage possible. Buses are multipliers, so the more of those the better.
After around 20 hours into this game, I really, really, enjoy this game. The freedom of being able to roam around and do whatever events whenever I want is way more fun than I originally thought.
